Our Nursery Environment

Our environment allows a child to choose their own activity, and to complete exercises at their own level in their own time. Interesting and stimulating apparatus is used to make learning fun and there is a huge variety of things to do which cover almost every aspect of life itself.

The classroom environment is carefully planned. It has a particular order and is designed to encourage children to develop their own capabilities. The children choose their work from the specially prepared environment and complete activities at their own level and pace until they have satisfied their own inner needs to learn a skill. It is this ability to interact with the environment freely that characterises a Montessori classroom.

We build on the diversity and richness of experience that children bring to our nursery, seeking to extend and develop those experiences. The skill of the Montessori teacher lies in observing the children to identify their needs and inner motivation in order to direct their activities so that they learn for themselves through personal experience of, and interaction with, the environment. The ability to guide the children in their learning whilst nurturing their spontaneous development has to be supported by an ability to scaffold the children's learning as and when it is appropriate.
